Summary

All sorcerers are evil。 Elisabeth has known that as long as she has known anything。 Raised as a foundling in one of Austermeer’s Great Libraries, Elisabeth has grown up among the tools of sorcery—magical grimoires that whisper on shelves and rattle beneath iron chains。 If provoked, they transform into grotesque monsters of ink and leather。 She hopes to become a warden, charged with protecting the kingdom from their power。

Then an act of sabotage releases the library’s most dangerous grimoire。 Elisabeth’s desperate intervention implicates her in the crime, and she is torn from her home to face justice in the capital。 With no one to turn to but her sworn enemy, the sorcerer Nathaniel Thorn, and his mysterious demonic servant, she finds herself entangled in a centuries-old conspiracy。 Not only could the Great Libraries go up in flames, but the world along with them。

As her alliance with Nathaniel grows stronger, Elisabeth starts to question everything she’s been taught—about sorcerers, about the libraries she loves, even about herself。 For Elisabeth has a power she has never guessed, and a future she could never have imagined。

Incredibly underwhelming。 I was so disappointed, given the interesting fantasy premise and lush imagery。 Every character is extremely two-dimensional and flat。 Here we go again, with: (1) a clumsy, hot-headed main character who possesses a mysterious and special power; (2) a charming, talented playboy sorcerer who is also lonely and misunderstood; and finally, (3) an emo, angst-ridden demon with a secret heart of gold。 Major cringe。Oh, and don't forget the #instalove, or the hastily thrown in bi Incredibly underwhelming。 I was so disappointed, given the interesting fantasy premise and lush imagery。 Every character is extremely two-dimensional and flat。 Here we go again, with: (1) a clumsy, hot-headed main character who possesses a mysterious and special power; (2) a charming, talented playboy sorcerer who is also lonely and misunderstood; and finally, (3) an emo, angst-ridden demon with a secret heart of gold。 Major cringe。Oh, and don't forget the #instalove, or the hastily thrown in bi representation that comes out of nowhere and is given like two sentences。I found myself speeding through the last couple of chapters, because I just didn't care about any of these people (and I do my best to finish each and every book, no matter how nonsensical or boring)。 Really, the plot would have benefitted MASSIVELY if the author had just added a couple of world-building chapters。 Maybe, oh, I don't know, context like sociopolitical struggles between magical/non-magical people?Or where the "all sorcerers are evil" came from? (Which, by the way, we never actually figure out why everyone thinks they're so evil。 I'm pretty sure they saved the world a couple of times。)Or what problems specifically made the villain want to (view spoiler)[summon a super-demon and supposedly solve "every problem in the world" (hide spoiler)]??? Like, can you get more generic than that?Just a bit more context and personality, PLEASE。 I'm begging you。 。。。more

i read this book because i heard it described as Howl’s Moving Castle meets dark academia, and it was very much that, in the best way! the writing was so gorgeous, and it was easy to get swept inside of the pages。 i loved the romance, the witty banter, the dark magic, and silas!!! my only complaint is that i had trouble focusing for the last quarter-ish of the book as it seemed to go on a bit too long。 but other than that, i loved every minute! and the ending had me very excited 🖤

I'm genuinely surprised how much I loved this stand alone。 I wasn't that interested at first and it took me a whole to pick it up again but I'm so glad I did。 The main character Elisabeth is an apprentice warden of the Great Library。 She discovers the director has been murdered。 She is accused of the crime, obviously since she was the only one awake at the time, and is sent to live with a sorcerer (whose gains his power through a demon, passed down in generations)。 And there they discovered the I'm genuinely surprised how much I loved this stand alone。 I wasn't that interested at first and it took me a whole to pick it up again but I'm so glad I did。 The main character Elisabeth is an apprentice warden of the Great Library。 She discovers the director has been murdered。 She is accused of the crime, obviously since she was the only one awake at the time, and is sent to live with a sorcerer (whose gains his power through a demon, passed down in generations)。 And there they discovered the plot against the magical books。The best thing about the book is definitely Silas, Nathanials and Elisabeth's tio relationship。 They all rely on each other to heal and its so interesting to watch them stugle with Silas demonic nature。 How he could seem so loving towards them both and yet, resort back to his horrible nature。 The books concept is also the best things about it。 I love the magical elements, the books that are alive and also turn into masters if not properly looked after。 The idea that families pass down powerful demons to keep the magic in the blood。 I haven't come across this concept and really love it。 I think this is mostly because it's connected to a moral dilemma since Silas is a servant yet, appears to enjoy their company despite not wanting to be enslaved。 I would highly recommend this book。 5 stars for sure。 。。。more

Every time I say I’m done with YA, I read another YA book。 But this one was actually good。 I loved reading about demons and sorcerers; there was some excellent world building and the MC is a badass bookworm who grew up in a library。 There’s romance, but it’s not overwhelming at all, and I aways love reading about magical libraries。 And Silas, a demon side character, was so morally grey。 I loved him。

April

I didn’t expect to enjoy this book as much as I did。 Definitely a 4。5。 The characters, premise, and writing were perfectly executed。 What I enjoyed especially is the balance between the romance, friendship, and adventure。 Plus, I almost died with that last sentence, it was just *chef’s kiss*。 I’m excited to read more from this author。

Interesting magic but not thought through enough。 I liked that it was a standalone, but perhaps I'd have enjoyed it more as a trilogy if that meant I could get deeper world building Interesting magic but not thought through enough。 I liked that it was a standalone, but perhaps I'd have enjoyed it more as a trilogy if that meant I could get deeper world building 。。。more
